Ensuring a safe transportation system allows people to travel at their leisure. In 2008, approximately 330 vehicle crashes occurred per day in Arizona. This was a 15% reduction from 2007, and a 17% reduction from 2006. The Recommended Framework proposes a series of safety enhancements to keep reducing Arizona’s crash rate. Additionally, a series of alternate routes are proposed to provide another means of access in and around urbanized areas, as well as provide detour routes during incident situations. These alternate routes might be new freeways or upgraded state highways. Last, more than 30 million people cross the Arizona-Mexico border legally each year on foot, via car, or in a commercial truck. Freight crossing the border could significantly increase with new deep-water port development in Mexico. Coordination of border crossing improvements between Arizona and Mexico is critical to maintain safe, secure, and efficient crossings.
