Building a Quality Arizona

Statewide Transportation
Planning Framework Recommendations

Multimodal Mobility

The Recommended Framework contains a series of roadway, transit, and passenger rail recommendations.  Individual vehicles are anticipated to remain the primary mode of circulation, and therefore improvements have been recommended to move people more efficiently, such as new roadways, expanded lanes on existing roadways, or safety enhancements.  Transit investments, such as bus or light rail, are proposed to complement the roadway system, providing an alternative means of travel within and between cities for regular trip-making, such as work, education, and entertainment purposes.  Passenger rail, on the other hand, is primarily proposed to move people longer distances, for commuting purposes within the larger metropolitan areas, and connecting communities such as Phoenix and Tucson, or Phoenix and Prescott/Flagstaff.  A rail system could evolve from commuter rail to intercity rail, and ultimately to high-speed rail.

If it were convenient, timely, got you to your destinations, and was reasonably priced, would you use transit on a regular basis?

What trigger points would cause you to use transit, or carpools, or walk more often, or use a bicycle for transportation?  The price of parking?  Fuel costs?  Time savings?

Is it a good idea for Arizona to invest in rail transit for commuting and circulating between major cities?  Would you use it?  Would your children use it in the future?

Needs are great and funds are short. How do we pay for transportation improvements? Are toll roads part of the answer?
